So Linux FF utilizes Linux icons, XP with XP icons, &amp;amp; Mac icons on the MacNew Location Bar. The place where you type the web address has gotten a major overhaul, it is now one part location bar, one part search, and one part bookmark locator.New Bookmarking engine, keeps tracks of sites you visit frequently, new "star" feature allows you to pick your "cream of the crop"Can be downloaded at http://www.mozilla.comMozilla is reporting that Firefox 3 was downloaded over 8 million times in 24 hours (8,290,908)Mr. Tech's ToolkitThis will help you get your non-compatible extensions working. Yahoo/Google Deal Covered very well by the good folks at TechCrunch Google and Yahoo have entered into a non-exclusive deal where Yahoo will run Google Ads next to Yahoo search resultsThe ads can be intersparsed with Yahoo ads as well as as from other providersThe deal is expected to bring around 800 million/year to Yahoo's revenue and 250-450 million operation cash flowThis means that the Yahoo/Microsoft talks are officially overAlso, the Department of Justice has already launched an investigation into the deal, but doesn't think there will be too much of an issue as the deal is not very anti-competitive in nature. AT&amp;amp;T, Comcast, &amp;amp; Time Warner Look to Meter Internet Usage Time Warner is already testing metered bandwidth in Beaumont, TXComcast said it is looking to give priority to certain kinds of traffic during peak hoursand AT&amp;amp;T said that limits on heavy use were inevitable. All this means that the future of the internet and how you choose to use it might be called into question as more companies look to make the heavy users pay more for bandwidthThe basic strategy here is that there will be different tiers of accounts as the amount of bandwidth (how much you download) increases, you'll need to pay for a more expensive plan. This harks back to the dial-up internet days when you got "x" number of hours on AOL (or Compuserve/Prodigy). "The water is free the pipes are not" - Leo Laporte on This Week in TechAs media moves to IPTV and digital downloads, everyone's internet usage is going to increase so the question then becomes, "who are the heavy users?" Revision3 utilizes BitTorrent technology to help distribute their shows They recently switched to new BitTorrent (tracker)server software and left it open A R3 user discovered this and informed R3 R3 closed the BT server to only allow downloads of their shows Doing so, caused MediaDefender to essentially flood R3's BT server with "hello" packets This brought down the R3 site, offices, and email server over Memorial Day weekend MediaDefender is a subsiderary of Artist Direct. MediaDefender uploads bad torrent files to illegal torrent sites and floods the torrent networks with bad data in order to protect the copyrights of RIAA and MPAA companies They basically just assumed that since that R3 was using BitTorrent for illegitamate purposes and when they were locked out, they flooded the server with requests The odd thing is, MediaDefender has a history of doing this kind of attack in the past (see Ars Technica article) RIM Beats Apple in Smartphone Sales in Q1 of this year, RIM has beat out Apple in smartphone sales, almost 2 to 1 RIM also sold the most smartphones for Q1 of 2008 The numbers? RIM 44.5% in Q1 (up from 33.5% in previous quarter) iPhone 19.2% (down from 26.7%) Palm 13.2% (up from 7.9%) thanks to the Centro device Samsung was in fourth One might be able to attribute the lack of iPhone sales is because of the strong rumors that a new one is expected to be announced/released early next week I expect that we will see different numbers for Q2 of this year, but I think that RIM might hold the number 1 spot If not they'll probably get it back by the end of this year, with the release of their newest devices: Bold, Kickstart, and their touchscreen ThunderAT&amp;amp;T touts 20% 3G Speed Increase Should get speeds between 700kbps and 1.7Mbps (up from 600-1.2)You'll currently only be able to get these nice new speeds with a LaptopConnect card but expect it to make its way to the handhelds soonAT&amp;amp;T is claiming to bring the speeds up to 20Mbps by 2010 Tech Picks [Derek] (Software, Hardware, Websites, Reviews) YubiKey Internet Radio in FrontRow Wufoo - collect forms online Check our our form IWantSandy Jott integration @ 866-JOTT-123 -- Jott Sandy Twitter integration Mobile integration E-Mail integration Powered by Stikkit Twhirl Microsoft Mediaroom Hands on with the Neflix Roku Interview Questions: YouTube Video Annotations http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/04/the-htc-touch-pro/ Hands on with the new Zune and ZunePassNice touch button interface for going up and downYou can't go wrong with 80 gigsAll my searches are dead on in the storeUsable with a single handZune Pass is da bomb diggity - 3 million tracks and growingAbility to share with 3 computers and 3 different devices Gamer's Corner [Steven] (Conferences, New Developments, Game Reviews) PS3 2.4 firmware upgrade in-game XMB Trophies rumored June Launch Gina Carano in C&amp;amp;C: Red Alert 3 Officially Hawt (Steven Wrote This)MMA Fighter that is also on American Gladiators "Crush" Street Fighter IV Feels like Street Fighter II (greatest fighting game ever) but looks modern Faith No More Version of a Trailer The home port will be superior to arcade version Online play Exclusive characters Slated for x360, PS3, and PC. Android World class webkit browser: Google Web Toolkit Pan around Street View Offline Content Google Gears HTML 5 Amazon Ready to Unbox Video Streaming for Digital Movies They already do pay-per-download New Image-recognition Software lets Computers see like Humans do Some researchers at MIT have found a way to easily identify the subject of an image with only a small number of pixels If the concept can be honed, it could lead towards being able to index images across the internet with ease What's the minimum a human needs to see in order to recognize the subject of an image? The researchers say only 32x32 pixels (about the size of a Windows desktop icon) Tivo Adds Another VOD Service Tivo has had a VOD service for a while now. They use Amazon's UnBox service for this. Now they have announced a deal with CinemaNow to (at the very least) get Disney content. This shows that Tivo is willing to partner with more than one VOD service (any takers on Netflix coming to Tivo within the year?) This is also good for Tivo because there was a lack of VOD on their end before the Unbox deal and the more they add to their boxes, the more value they add to that 19.95/month subscription fee you'll pay for their box. Tech Picks [Derek] (Software, Hardware, Websites, Reviews) Summize - Search Twitter Conversations Seesmic - Think Twitter, but with video If you have a webcam and you like the idea behind Twitter, you might want to take a look at Seesmic. Currently Alpha (pre-beta) &amp;amp; invite only, this service allows you to create short little videos that can then be uploaded. You can also record directly from the webpage, so no uploading necessary. The interface is slick and the concept might be overkill but they are working with various blogs to allow the ability to do video comments (see TechCrunch or Disqus). After using this a few times, I have to say the concept is extremely interesting. You are left with videos between 15 seconds and 1:30 long. People hold entire conversations this way. You can follow people like on Twitter or you can just select a specific conversation (it keeps a running tab on the more recent/popular ones). Microsoft Research WorldWide Telescope We talked about this two-three weeks ago As I recall I was told that "Google Sky is better because you don't have to download anything" Build a Square-Foot Garden Thanks to Steven's kid, I have been recently shoehorned into subscribing to Wired again and somehow square foot gardening caught my attention?!? Check out this article from Robert Scoble on Microsoft/Yahoo/Facebook (Why Microsoft Will Buy Facebook and Keep it Closed) The basics of this talk about Facebook &amp;amp; Google and the lack of Facebook indexed results in Google searches If Microsoft buys Yahoo's search and Facebook, then Microsoft/Yahoo's search has tons of relevancy because it can get to pages Google can't excerpt: "Relevancy on Yahoo search will go through the roof when it has access to Facebook data and Google doesn’t. Without getting too technical, DTS-HD Master Audio offers 7-channels of lossless audio at 96K sampling frequency and 24-bit depths--which means that the sound sent to your receiver should be identical to the studio master. While some sticklers will point out that the PS3 can't output Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in bitstream format, it's definitely a non-issue. Decoding the audio at the source is actually better than having the ability to bitstream high-resolution soundtracks, since it means even people with older HDMI-capable receivers can enjoy the high quality audio. Sure, your receiver won't light up the pretty DTS-HD Master Audio logo, but who cares--you still get the same great sound. Several people in fact claim that violent video games help keep them in check, by allowing them to get out aggression against imaginary objects and people rather than real ones. </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Technology,News,Computer,Privacy,Security,Password,Information,Computer,Help</itunes:keywords><description>[Download Show #78 as MP3]

Web Picks Mahalo If Google's goal is to index the world's data then it's Mahalo's goal to curate that index and only pick out the best results Take for example if you search for "Paris Hotels" on Google, you'll get a zillion responses and probably not a lot that are overly helpful in picking a hotel for your trip to Paris Now do the same search in Mahalo you will get information on Luxury Hotels, Moderate Hotels, and Affordable Hotels. You will also get a "sidebar" that gives you facts on Paris, other Mahalo pages that could assist you in planing a trip to Paris, and some top picks for hotels. How do they do this? They have a team of people that sort through searches being done and then finding the best results. You can also sign up for an account and add to their results list by installing a toolbar in your browser that lets you "recommend sites" and attach that recommendation to a search term/phrase Another cool thing is if a page does not exist for your search, you can request it be made. This request goes to the Mahalo folks and they start working on finding the best search results for that page. It can take some time though The downside is, not every search is going to pull back something and they are not going to make pages for extremely one-off kinds of searches. But if it's something that a lot of people search for then chances are they've got 20-60 great links for you to click through.Lightsaber duels1 of 22 of 2Gamer's Corner Hands-On Metal Gear Solid Killer deep story line New intuitive game controls Sensational graphics Epic sound effects and soundtrack Updates at OMGMetalGear.com Game play videos and full review at GamePro JavaScript Mario How cool is that?Large Mario TinyWarz Fun fully web-based game (no flash, all javascript)Creator = Vladimir LoscutoffMultiplayer online persistent world, apocalyptic feel Not text based, icon and picture based GUI Build your armies and your crews by collecting "sets" (think MoTG) Level up by killing bandits and later on, other people Customize your units and armies Turn / Time based Free option Micro-payments option through Paypal available for more advanced units One word: Addicting Beginners Guide: http://wiki.mobrulestudios.com/index.php?title=NewPlayers:FoolieGuide</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Technology,News,Computer,Privacy,Security,Password,Information,Computer,Help</itunes:keywords><description>[Download Show #77 as MP3]

I'M OUTRAGED!! if they were doing their jobs correctly and FAIRLY- they wouldn't have to WORRY! but because we have SO MANY underpaid, corrupt officers who have access to entirely too much privileged information, they are gonna use it to their benefit, no matter what. I think this is what AMERICA NEEDS- someone to CHECK the police officers- we're all about checks and balances right? The host- Godaddy.com removed the site but it was quickly picked up by another host RateMyProfessor.com AideRSS.com If you're anything like Michael and Derek (well mostly like Michael), then you have a ton of RSS feeds that you read through on a daily basis. This might keep you up to date on the latest happenings but sometimes things can get lost in the shuffle when you have over 200 unread RSS items. This is where AideRSS comes in. You feed it your RSS feed list, and it helps determine different kinds of feed lists based on all the feeds' feed ranks. This will get you a nice list of "Top Stories" so that you can get to the "meat" of your RSS subscriptions right away, and wade through the rest later. You can adjust the feeds to help bring in more stories from certain sites, and increase the number of stories you want to see Its a great way to get to the good stuff a little quicker, when you don't have the time to wade through it all. Gamer's Corner Nazi game http://news.filefront.com/no-nintendo-nazi-game-for-america/ so the new york times is saying that a controversial game will NOT be released in north america... but Alten8, the maker of the game, says nintendo has not blocked this wii game (but they ARE definately releasing it in europe... weird?) its funny that they say its controversial... when just weeks ago i read an article on digg about the "five popular brands the nazis gave us," including Volkswagon &amp;amp; IBM. this game is called "imagination is the only escape" some seems to think it could be a good history lesson... i mean after all we DO teach about the holocaust in school, its not a big dark secret. in the game, you are playing as a young prisoner, which i don't think is too bad- afterall, many of these games have kids playing as gangsters and killers i did not read anywhere that you can switch and play the 'nazi' role as well, because THAT in my opinion would be sick, and going way too far with it. i don't have a wii but when this game comes out i wanna know what ya'll think about it (but like alot of violent video games, you should probably play it before you give it to your kids) so email Suzy with comments about the game in general or critiques once you get a chance to play it Geek Out Laptop of 2015 what i wanna know is- "will we be able to SIT on the thing???" instead of folding, it one screen slides into place next to the otheruses two super bright organic LED panelsonly 3/4 of an inch thick</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>Technology,News,Computer,Privacy,Security,Password,Information,Computer,Help</itunes:keywords><description>[Download Show #75 as MP3]

China's State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) supposedly instructed Tudou to close its doors, and word is it's because the people responsible for taking down illegal material missed some porn. As for its potential shutdown, Danwei, one of the most reliable sources on Chinese internet news, tracked down some facts but nothing conclusive. One unnamed Tudou source told a Chinese source that they haven't been asked to shut down. Meanwhile, Marbridge Consulting, whose staff watch the Chinese tech industry closely for a variety of clients claims to have confirmed with unnamed authorities that Tudou has been ordered to shut down, but they don't say whether the report they've translated is accurate in saying that the shut-down may be temporary.Apple iTunes is now fully integrated with facebook through a built-in music sectionCan see artists/preview their musicpurchase individual tracks and entire albums smart to partner instead of creating their own (more diversity for everyone)Apple Announces iPhone Enterprise Features &amp;amp; iPhone SDK (Development Kit) Enterprise FeaturesExchange SupportPush Mail/Contact/Calendar with Exchange ServersAlso coming are global address list, Cisco IPsec VPN, authentication and certs, enterprise class WiFi (WPA2 / 802.1x), security policies, enterprise configuration tools, and remote wipeAlso Microsoft and Apple have partnered and developed an ActiveSync for the iPhone to allow better integration with ExchangeiPhone SDK (Development Kit)This is a full fledged development kitContains access to pretty much all of the iPhone's advanced features (multi-touch, accelorometer, video/audio layer, etc)Mac only development $99 "entry" fee, this gets a certificate to sign your applications withThe App Store will be the only way to distribute your application(s) to iPhone/iTouch usersApple will monitor applications available in the App Store rejecting those that are malicious or adult in nature Both the enterprise features and third party application support will come in the iPhone 2.0 softwareFree iPhone upgrade. Combine that with the ability to get the multi-track files via a package deal, and we should be seeing a good number of remixes begin to pop up. Granted, there are several less famous independent artists whom would love the kind of press that Mr. Trent Reznor is, and you can find several of those artists on eMusic.com &amp;amp; MySpace. It is important to note that the music industry is changing. Distribution models like the one NIN is demonstrating might become the rule rather than the exception over the next few years. In recent months cable and Internet companies like Comcast, AT&amp;amp;T and Verizon have repeatedly been caught blocking, filtering, and spying on consumers' Internet activities. The FCC responded to the thousands of people who expressed their outrage over the anti-competitive practices by holding this hearing in Boston, Massachusetts.Monday, February 25thThe Harvard Law SchoolListen/Read the hearing here Hundreds of concerned citizens arrived to speak out on the importance of an open Internet. Many took the day off from work — standing outside in the Boston cold — to see the FCC Commissioners. But when they reach the door, they’re told they couldn’t come in.The size of the crowd was evidence that many Americans don’t want giant corporations like Comcast and Verzion to decide what we can do and where we can go on the Internet. While there wasn't an "open mic" at the event, the SaveTheInternet coalition was on hand to video tape comments from concerned citizens to send the FCC.However, for many people who showed up on time for the hearing, they didn't get the opportunity to participate because Comcast paid people to fill the room, stack it in their favor, More than 100 people who arrived at the appointed time for the hearing were turned away by campus police because the room was already full. The Cambridge hearing is part of the FCC’s ongoing investigation into Comcast’s blocking of Internet traffic. But there’s much more at stake. We are at a critical juncture, where it will be decided whether we have a closed Internet controlled by a small handful of giant corporations, or an open Internet controlled by the people who use it. Comcast wants the former — to dictate which Web sites and services go fast, slow or don’t load at all. And they’re backed by the other would-be gatekeepers at AT&amp;amp;T, Verizon and Time Warner. Tell the FCC to stop Comcast from blocking Internet traffic and to permanently protect Net Neutrality: http://www.savetheinternet.com/comcast.phpEmail to HD DVD subscribers of Netflix As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. Wubi provides a complete Ubuntu installer that can be run in Windows from the Ubuntu Live CD. It installs Ubuntu into a folder on the Windows file system and sets up a boot menu so that users can choose between Windows and Ubuntu when the computer starts.Unlike a regular dual-boot configuration, Wubi doesn't require users to create a partition on their hard drives for Ubuntu. You may THINK "what's the big deal- i'm just sharing this with my friends?" WRONG.stuff that used to be private is now being investigated by law enforcement, attorneys, employers, schools Besides some of the obvious no-no's like bad-mouthing your job or colleagues, small things you THINK are harmless may offend someone else or change the way they see you and work with you court cases- in sexual assault cases &amp;amp; DWI suspect- a VICTIM &amp;amp; a CRIMINAL- both having their personal lives on trial scholarships pulled for pictures found I think it's wrong. I think it's completely wrong BUT the fact IS: it's happening anyway. I wouldn't want to work for a company that did that or go to a school that did that but it's not guaranteed to be avoidableSo I've had a disclaimer at the bottom of my facebook page FOREVER stating that "nothing stated in my page may be held as truth"... does that do ANYTHING for my privacy? Assuming I'm not bad mouthing my current job... Although- where do they draw the line? WHO says what's good for a company and bad? Unless I'm the Public relations representative why should it matter if I constructively criticize the company and state my opinions in a non-aggressive or non- derogatory manner? If lawyers can use your information in child custody or marital cases.. what about smokers who tell their insurance companies they DON'T smoke? Will they start seeking out pictures of their clients, smoking in bars and such? HelloTxt.com helps with this. You sign up for an account, feed it your micro-blogging sites info, and you can then post updates from one place to several micro-blogs (more than just the 3 mentioned above) One of HelloTxt.com's biggest failings, is the lack of a mobile interface; a way to update from your phone. Well they now have a mobile version of the website that is currently invite only. We don't have invites yet, so if you have some that you can send our way, please do by emailing us (theshow@powerofinformation.net) New Firefox 2.0.0.12 Polaroid Closing Instant Film FactoriesIn an effort to keep up with the latest technology, Polaroid is cutting alot of jobs this year After a 25-30 percent drop in sales each year, the company known for instant film finally gave up on instant film. But now they can put more into their digital cameras, tv's, dvd players, and portable cell-phone printers (w/ zink) to stay competitive, and keep the company alive for years to come Microsoft Offers to Buy Yahoo, Yahoo Rejects About a week and a half ago Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo! for 44.6 billion dollars The offer was made as a half cash/half stock deal Microsoft figured Yahoo was ripe for the taking because Yahoo has not been performing well lately. With a revolving door of CEOs and other high profile positions, Yahoo has not really had a solid plan of action for over a year. Microsoft also thought that the buyout would help both companies compete against their number one competitor, Google who has owned the search engine market since it pretty much made its first appearance. This is the second time that Microsoft has attempted a partnership with Yahoo. Back around this time last year, Microsoft and Yahoo were in talks to form some form of partnership between the two companies. However talks quickly ended with no real explanation given. This past week, Yahoo officially reject Microsoft's offer. Some analysts are saying that Yahoo wants more cash (around 56 billion dollars) before they'd be willing to sell. So this rejection might not be the end of the Microsoft/Yahoo talks However, they seem to be looking elsewhere, current articles are point to AOL as a potential partner and even Google has supposedly gotten into the game. Is Yahoo looking to sell or are they simply looking for a way to get back on their feet? And to top things off, Microsoft has told Yahoo that the talks are not over yet. Rumors abound that if Microsoft can't the the Yahoo Board of directors to play ball, they'll take their case to the Yahoo! stock holders. Will Microsoft throw more money at Yahoo in hopes they'll sell?
